Alternative Materials Make Inferior Refrigeration Night Covers

ECONOFROST Night Shades

Plastic and Vinyl Strips for Open Refrigerated Merchandisers

Plastic strip curtains hung on refrigerated display cases are not energy efficiency as they allow heat and ultra violet radiation to penetrate the case covers. Plastic display case shields quickly become yellowed, scratched, and dirty, further obstructing an already unclear view of the perishable goods in the refrigerated display case.

Plastic strip case covers are also a physical obstruction that must be moved aside when customers want to access refrigerated merchandise.

Vinyl strips were intended to remain on refrigeration display cases 24 hours a day, but lowering ECONOFROST refrigeration night covers for only 9 hours is more energy efficient than 24 hours of vinyl strips due to the aluminum heat reflective fabric of ECONOFROST’s night curtains.

Plastic Refrigeration Display Case Curtains

Plastic night curtains that pull down over the opening of refrigerated display cases during the supermarket’s closed hours have been marketed by almost every retailer at one time or another; like strip curtains they provide minimal energy efficiency because they do not reflect heat and ultra violet radiation.

Plastic refrigeration nightshades become yellow, brittle, and soon crack or tear, quickly reducing your pay back. Commercial refrigeration night covers of this type attract moisture, dust, and mildew, which is a health issue and is unappealing to customers.

Plastic night curtains are manufactured in small segments of up to four feet. They are manually operated and often do not even have a spring mechanism to ensure proper functioning. ECONOFROST refrigeration shields on the other hand can be made in widths of 4 feet, 6 feet and 8 feet and are available in either manual or fully automatic styles.

Refrigerator Case Glass Doors

Glass doors commonly used on supermarket display cases for packaged frozen products will reduce sales if they are used on refrigeration display cases containing perishable goods because they reduce the visibility of fresh items whose sales rely heavily on eye appeal. Any energy saved by installing glass refrigerator doors is offset by the energy needed to heat the glass to prevent it from fogging.

Polyester Film Refrigeration Night Covers

Night covers made from thin polyester film show a much lower energy savings than reflective aluminum night shields. These cheap low quality night curtains lose their formed tension in a short time and become an obstruction for customers who want to access items in the refrigeration display case. In addition, polyester film display case blinds soon become yellowed and dirty. Many who try cheap night covers quickly discard them due to their poor appearance and performance.

ECONOFROST - Independently Tested & Approved

When Southern California Edison (SCE) tested Econofrost, the results showed that in order to be effective and achieve the reported 36% energy savings, a night cover MUST possess low-emissive properties:

Aluminum has exceptional low-emissive properties and absorbs very little radiated heat from the environment, reflecting most of it back to the surroundings. Low Emissive properties are used to reduce thermal conductivity by suppressing radiative heat flow. By reflecting radiant energy and preventing it from entering the case, Econofrost allows more efficient refrigerated case operation. The radiant heat originating from the store is reflected back to the store and does not enter the case.

ECONOFROST's Woven Aluminum Fabric Is The Best For Energy Savings and Product Protection

Econofrost, with a low emissivity, ensures significantly better case temperature management which in turn allows for better product integrity as well as reductions in shrink and spoilage. Further, the fabric perforations - representing 1.5% of the total surface area allow condensation to evaporate during use as well as when the fabric is retracted. Customers using the covers find product holding temperatures are stabilized more consistently than without the covers, and product freshness and integrity is maintained for better shelf-life.

ECONOFROST Outperforms Other Night Covers

Different covers with higher emissivities absorb more radiated heat and transfer that heat into the case via conduction. And further, other night cover providers base their documentation on the report by SCE, but the fabrics used in their covers clearly do not possess the properties and characteristics required by SCE to achieve the tested 36% energy savings. Therefore, any energy savings claims by those companies are unsupported and undocumented.

Also, as is widely recognized throughout the industry, temperature and humidity management in open refrigerated display equipment can be challenging at best. Cold air spill, warm air entrainment, heat radiation from store conditions, re-stocked product; all contribute to difficulty in managing temperature of products while on display. During those hours the stores is closed, Econofrost covers trap cold air in the display case while reflecting ambient head and radiation back into the store - ensuring longer product shelf life and allowing for a more temperature stable and comfortable store environment.

ECONOFROST is More Than Energy Savings

Refrigerated cases that use no cover or an improperly designed cover may see discharge air temperatures as much as 15° F during the defrost periods which can cause product temperature to rise approximately 1° F. Furthermore, without the proper thermal and reflective barrier, product temperature will continue to rise until the defrost cycle completes and the discharge air drops below that of the product.

However, when product temperatures remain at a constant near the discharge air temperature, the product integrity is maintained and its shelf life is extended creating tremendous savings in reduced shrink and discard - resulting in savings that often surpass the energy savings.

Designed to last the life of the display case, Econofrost's payback is generally in the one year vicinity. Specific time frames vary from store to store, and savings from reduced energy consumption can be only approximately 50% of the payback. Savings from reduced shrink and discard, and rapid response protection during power outages add tremendous value to the payback period and ROI.
