The grocery store also has many open refrigerated cases(without doors). The easy access to the food is convenient for customers, but hard on the budget. The cool air inand around the coolers competes with the ambient air in the aisles. Forty-eight energy-efficient night covers were installed over the open cases. These lightweight, easy-to-operate pull-down metal shades are an elegant solution. Now, when the store is closed, the cool air is contained.In the winter, when the building is being heated, this is especially helpful. Total lifetime savings from energy-efficient cooler night covers: 651,400 kilowatt-hours.


Vertical night covers are a great tool to increase energy efficiency. The covers, which are easy to install, keep cool air confined in display cases, reducing the amount of energy required to keep the cases cool. An additional benefit is that night covers extend the shelf life of perishable goods. Rabban’s Save-A-Lot added 84 feet of vertical night covers to its coolers, saving an estimated $1,100 annually in electricity costs.

Monthly PG & E bill is down $1,500 – $2,000 per month. Produce trim and trim time is down significantly. Produce looks much fresher in the morning when the covers are lifted. Meat re-wraps/package weeping is down. MEat dowes not tan. The store went through a fine and ahalf hour power failure and zero merchandises was lost.

Bashas’ chose a store with high traffic counts to evaluate the durability and impact of the night shades. “It was obvious from the pilot that the night covers were a solid energy-saving solution for our stores,” said Rick Hamm, VP Construction. The original plan was to install the night covers in half of the stores that Bashas’ operates. “When we saw the results, we decided to expand the night shades to as many stores as possible,” said Hamm.
