George – Produce Department reports, “produce is benefiting from the covers with extended shelf life & a lot less trim on leafy greens, also noted that bean sprouts are keeping to the next day & that did not happen before the covers were installed…”
Deli Manager likes the covers and noted that the packaged salads keep their freshness and color longer. Also said the packaged beans don’t have the lids puffing up like they did before Econo-Frost were installed.
Assistant Manager reports, “Yes we like these a lot, you’re a popular guy.” He showed me the frozen pizza end cap and noticed how firm the pizza is, he said before the ECONOFROST covers were installed the some pizzas would become soft and he would lose some product.
“We installed ECONOFROST night covers throughout our entire store in May 2011 and in addition to the excellent energy savings, we are also saving anywhere from $200-$300 per month in our produce department in reduced shrink, trim and discard. And that’s not even counting the money we save from re-directing the labor we were previously using to re-merchandise the produce cases each morning“.
Tom – Store Manager, 3-Store Chain in Upstate Michigan, October 2011
Supermercados Grande installed ECONOFROST night covers in their store and with monthly savings of close to $3,000 the results led them to install night covers in the remaining 29 stores for expected savings of over $1 million dollars annually and a payback time of 7 months!
“The produce/cheese case pull down shades have saved me $400 -$500 on electricity alone for each and every month since installation”.
George Civiletto – Owner Tuscany Fresh Meats and Deli, Fredonia, NY
By adding night shades to all the open-faced refrigerators in the store, Ancona’s Market was able to cut electric consumption by 20 percent.
“Given that our electric bill is about $18,000 a month, that’s a good savings,” he said. “For our meat case, with the night shade, the refrigeration is better, which increases the shelf life of our meats.”
Joe Ancona – Owner of Ancona’s Market
“We wanted to provide the best possible customer service by keeping the coolers open during the day to provide easy access, yet reduce our energy waste at night. The insulated blinds keep the cold air in. As an added bonus, they improve product life by keeping the temperatures more consistent.”
Daniel Head – Owner of Ruddy Potato
The grocery store also has many open refrigerated cases(without doors). The easy access to the food is convenient for customers, but hard on the budget. The cool air inand around the coolers competes with the ambient air in the aisles. Forty-eight energy-efficient night covers were installed over the open cases. These lightweight, easy-to-operate pull-down metal shades are an elegant solution. Now, when the store is closed, the cool air is contained. In the winter, when the building is being heated, this is especially helpful. Total lifetime savings from energy-efficient cooler night covers: 651,400 kilowatt-hours.
Vertical night covers are a great tool to increase energy efficiency. The covers, which are easy to install, keep cool air confined in display cases, reducing the amount of energy required to keep the cases cool. An additional benefit is that night covers extend the shelf life of perishable goods. Rabban’s Save-A-Lot added 84 feet of vertical night covers to its coolers, saving an estimated $1,100 annually in electricity costs.
Rabban is pleased with his decision to participate in the program: “I love the idea of saving money while I am doing what is environmentally right. I also really like the feel of the store!” He isn’t alone. According to Rabban, “Both our customers and employees are very positive about the store’s comfort and product freshness.“
Monthly PG & E bill is down $1,500 – $2,000 per month. Produce trim and trim time is down significantly. Produce looks much fresher in the morning when the covers are lifted. Meat re-wraps/package weeping is down. MEat dowes not tan. The store went through a fine and ahalf hour power failure and zero merchandises was lost.
Chuck Robinson – Manager of HQF
“Installing ECONOFROST has saved us $3,500 per year per store!”
Energy Manager – Raley’s
Bashas’ chose a store with high traffic counts to evaluate the durability and impact of the night shades. “It was obvious from the pilot that the night covers were a solid energy-saving solution for our stores,” said Rick Hamm, VP Construction. The original plan was to install the night covers in half of the stores that Bashas’ operates. “When we saw the results, we decided to expand the night shades to as many stores as possible,” said Hamm.
